Existing Systems within Netflix
current systemCustomer interaction is almost entirely through the netflix.com website. The customer builds
an initial queue of DVDs they would like to rent, making selections from the large Netflix library.
Concurrrently, Netflix subscribers may instantly view movies using Video On Demand.
The Web interface translates the Oracle database information (available movies, customer information, recommendations, etc.) into a friendly user interface and vice-versa. The information
is parsed by Oracle and shipping requests are sent to the regional warehouse nearest the customer.
Customers are asked to rate recently viewed movies. This data is gathered and processed by the Cinematch™ rating system. Cinematch™ then recommends movies based on previous rentals, ratings, and other customers' data.
In the background, transparent to the customer, the Oracle database is maintaining all business data as well as handling business processes for the company. (Finances, accounting, etc.)
