From what I can tell, AMI technology basically allows consumers (individuals, corporate, etc.) to monitor their energy usage and take actions to adjust and/or curb usage. Until I read this, it never really occurred to me how ridiculous it is that I have an electricity meter outside of our house that I can't read and use as a tool for modifying my consumption behaviors--thus the only way I know how much energy we use is when we get our Illuminating Co. bill.
